College Station is moving forward with the next phase of planning for the Harvey Road corridor, an area that serves thousands of residents, businesses and drivers each day.
The city’s redevelopment effort is examining the future of Harvey Road and surrounding properties as College Station continues to grow.
Planning work began earlier this year and has included analysis of existing conditions, development patterns and transportation needs. The next phase is expected to include additional opportunities for community input.
The project could eventually influence transportation, development and public improvements along one of College Station’s heavily traveled commercial corridors.
Harvey Road Serves a Busy Part of College Station
Harvey Road connects residential neighborhoods, apartment communities, businesses and major roads on the east side of College Station.
Traffic data presented during the city’s planning process showed portions of Harvey Road carrying as many as approximately 25,000 vehicles per day. Nearby Texas Avenue handles considerably more traffic.
The redevelopment study area is also home to thousands of residents.
City planning information presented earlier in the process estimated that roughly 5,500 people live within or immediately adjacent to the study area. Many are renters, reflecting the large number of apartments and student-oriented housing developments located throughout this portion of College Station.
Those characteristics make transportation, housing and commercial development important parts of the redevelopment discussion.
Redevelopment Planning Looks Beyond Road Construction
The Harvey Road project is broader than simply repaving or widening a street.
College Station is studying how land use, transportation, businesses, housing and public spaces could develop throughout the corridor over time.
The area already generates significant economic activity. Previous planning information indicated businesses within the corridor received more than 15 million visits during 2025.
Future recommendations could therefore affect not only people traveling through Harvey Road but also property owners, businesses and residents who live nearby.
The redevelopment plan is intended to provide a longer-term framework rather than immediately authorize individual construction projects throughout the corridor.
Community Input Will Continue
Public participation is another part of the planning process.
College Station began community engagement during the first phase of the project and plans additional engagement as the redevelopment plan progresses.
Feedback can give residents, business owners and other stakeholders an opportunity to identify concerns involving traffic, development, pedestrian access and other issues affecting the corridor.
That input becomes increasingly important as planners move from studying existing conditions toward developing potential recommendations.
Any eventual changes would still depend on future city decisions, funding and, in some cases, separate approval processes. The redevelopment plan itself provides guidance for how the area could evolve over the coming years.
College Station Continues to Plan for Growth
Harvey Road is one example of the broader planning challenges facing Bryan-College Station as population and development continue changing the area.
Growth can bring new housing and businesses, but it can also increase pressure on roads and other infrastructure.
Planning corridors before major problems develop can give cities an opportunity to coordinate transportation improvements with future development.
For residents, the next phase of the Harvey Road process will provide a clearer picture of what College Station officials and planners believe should happen along the corridor.
