Bryan is extending its partnership with the company that operates Legends Event Center and expanding that relationship to include Travis Fields, bringing two of the city’s major youth sports facilities under the same management structure.
The Bryan City Council approved an amended agreement with Sports Facilities Management on Sept. 15 that extends the company’s management of Legends Event Center through September 2032. The agreement also adds Travis Fields to the company’s responsibilities beginning Oct. 1.
City officials say bringing the facilities together is intended to create a more coordinated sports operation capable of attracting tournaments and visitors while continuing to provide recreation opportunities for Bryan residents.
Legends Event Center Has Become a Major Bryan Sports Facility
Legends Event Center opened in December 2022 at Bryan Midtown Park and has grown into an important part of the city’s sports and recreation offerings. The approximately 122,000-square-foot facility was designed to accommodate basketball, volleyball and other indoor sports.
The facility includes eight basketball courts that can be converted into 16 volleyball courts, along with other amenities. Its flexible layout allows Bryan to host large tournaments while also using the building for local programs, practices and events.
Travis Fields Is Joining the Same Management Team
The new agreement goes beyond extending the Legends Event Center contract. Beginning Oct. 1, Sports Facilities Management will also oversee Travis Fields, Bryan’s youth baseball complex.
Travis Fields is located at 2200 Bomber Drive and includes 11 lighted baseball fields. Bringing the baseball complex and indoor event center under the same management company gives Bryan a more unified approach to operating two facilities capable of hosting youth sports events.
The Agreement Runs Through September 2032
The amended management agreement extends through Sept. 30, 2032, giving the city and Sports Facilities Management a long-term arrangement for the facilities. The City Council approved the changes during its Sept. 15 meeting.
Longer-term management can also give the operator more time to schedule tournaments and develop relationships with sports organizations. Large youth tournaments are often planned well in advance, making future availability an important part of attracting recurring events.
Bryan Wants to Attract More Sports Tourism
These facilities are not intended only for people who live in Bryan. Large tournaments can bring athletes, coaches and families from across Texas and beyond into the Bryan–College Station area.
Those visitors may stay in local hotels, eat at restaurants and spend money at other businesses while attending multi-day events. That is why cities increasingly view youth and amateur sports facilities as both recreational amenities and potential economic-development tools.
Bryan officials specifically described the new arrangement as strengthening the city’s ability to attract tournaments and expand its position in the sports tourism market.
Midtown Park Plays a Bigger Role in the City’s Plans
Legends Event Center is one piece of the larger Bryan Midtown Park development. The park sits along South College Avenue and includes recreation and entertainment amenities that the city has been developing over several years.
Locating a major indoor sports facility there means tournament visitors are entering an area Bryan has targeted for continued redevelopment. Events at Legends can therefore affect more than the facility itself as visitors travel through Bryan, purchase food and potentially visit other parts of the city.
Local Athletes Still Use the Facilities
Tournament tourism may be an important part of the strategy, but both facilities also serve people who live in the Bryan–College Station area. Legends Event Center hosts sports programs and other activities throughout the year, while Travis Fields has a long history as a home for youth baseball.
That balance will remain important as the facilities attract larger events. A successful tournament calendar can bring outside visitors to Bryan, while local availability determines how much residents directly benefit from the city’s investment in sports infrastructure.
Managing Both Facilities Could Create New Opportunities
Having one company oversee both an indoor multi-sport venue and an outdoor baseball complex could allow Bryan to market a broader collection of facilities to tournament organizers.
Basketball and volleyball events can take place at Legends, while Travis Fields provides dedicated baseball facilities. Although the venues serve different sports, operating both within one management structure could simplify scheduling, marketing and relationships with tournament organizers.
The city says the change is intended to improve operational efficiency and strengthen coordination between the two facilities.
What Bryan Residents Should Watch Next
The first major change arrives Oct. 1, when Sports Facilities Management is scheduled to begin managing Travis Fields. Residents can then watch for changes in programming, tournament schedules and how the two facilities are promoted together.
The agreement itself stretches much further, through September 2032. That gives Bryan several years to measure whether combining the facilities under one operator leads to more tournaments, more visitors and increased use of the city’s sports facilities.
For residents, the bigger question will be how Bryan balances those regional events with access for local athletes and families as the city’s sports tourism strategy continues to grow.
